Reading Bank — Three Passages from the Course

Passage 1 — "An Order Goes Wrong" (Week 4)

Zeynep runs an online shop that sells handmade candles. She set up the business two years ago in a small room in her flat. Today she has a website, an Instagram account and about 3,000 customers.

Last month, a hotel in Bodrum sent her an order for 200 candles and 50 gift boxes. It was the biggest order she ever had. But there was a problem: she didn't have any wax left. She called her supplier, but he said, "Sorry, we don't have any wax in stock until next week. We've run out."

Zeynep didn't want to put off the order. She asked other suppliers for some advice, and one of them had some wax, but it was more expensive. "Do you think I could get a small discount?" she asked. The supplier agreed to 5% off because it was a big order.

Zeynep worked every evening for a week. Her sister and two friends helped her pack the boxes. The candles arrived at the hotel on time, and the manager wrote, "The guests love them!" Now the hotel orders from her every month, and her business is really taking off.

Passage 2 — "Which Laptop Should I Buy?" (Week 9)

Elif is a second-year business student, and her old laptop is the slowest machine in her class. Last week it crashed during a presentation, and she lost her slides because she hadn't backed them up. "That was the worst moment of the semester," she says. She decided to buy a new one.

She came across three options online. Laptop A is the cheapest, at 18,000 lira, but it's also the heaviest and its battery is the weakest. Laptop B costs 25,000 lira. It is lighter than Laptop A and its battery lasts much longer — about ten hours. Laptop C is the most expensive, at 40,000 lira, and the fastest, but it isn't as light as Laptop B.

Elif asked her cousin, who works in IT. "What would you do if you were me?" she asked. "For a student, battery life is more important than speed," he said. "You don't need the fastest laptop. You need the most reliable one." "I couldn't agree more," said Elif.

She ended up buying Laptop B. It turned out to be a great choice: it's quieter than her old laptop, and she can work all day at the library without looking for a socket. Now she never falls behind with her assignments — and she backs up everything to the cloud.

  1. Why did Elif lose her slides? - A) She deleted the file by mistake - B) Her laptop crashed and she had no backup - C) Someone stole her laptop at the library - D) The projector at university wasn't working

  5. "It turned out to be a great choice" means: - A) She later found that it was a great choice - B) She returned it to the shop later - C) It became better after a repair - D) She changed her mind about it

Passage 3 — "A Family Business Changes Hands" (Week 12)

Hasan opened a small hardware store in Üsküdar in 1995. For 25 years, the shop was busy, because there weren't many other hardware stores in the area. But compared to the 1990s, things are very different today. Big DIY chains opened nearby, and customers started buying online, so Hasan's sales fell every year.

In 2022, his daughter Leyla took over the business.

She had a degree in business administration, but she had no experience in hardware. "As far as I knew, a hammer was a hammer," she laughs. She ran into problems in the first month: the old computer broke down, and many suppliers only took orders by phone or fax.

Leyla made three big changes. First, she opened an online shop, and she started posting short repair videos on Instagram. Second, she cut down on products that nobody bought, so the shop had more space and less dead stock. Third, she offered a delivery service for older customers, because many of them couldn't carry heavy things.

"As far as profit is concerned, we're doing better than ever," Leyla says. "But you have to be careful with online sales. Delivery costs can be high, so you need to check your prices often." Her father still comes to the shop every morning. "He can't keep up with the technology," she says, "but nobody knows the customers better than him."

  1. When did Hasan open the shop? - A) In 1995 - B) In 2005 - C) In 2015 - D) In 2022

  2. Why did Hasan's sales fall? - A) He raised his prices too often - B) Big chains opened and people bought online - C) He moved the shop to another area - D) His main suppliers closed down

  3. What problem did Leyla run into in the first month? - A) The shop was flooded after heavy rain - B) Her father left the business - C) Customers complained about the prices - D) The old computer broke down

  4. Why did Leyla offer a delivery service? - A) To sell more products on her online shop - B) Because her suppliers asked her to do it - C) Because older customers couldn't carry heavy things - D) To get rid of the dead stock in the shop

  5. What does Leyla say about her father? - A) He has retired and never visits the shop - B) He runs the online shop and social media - C) He doesn't like any of her changes - D) He can't keep up with technology but knows the customers well
